[00:01.00]Fear is a cage
[00:03.00]It holds me
[00:04.00]Traps me in an immovable state
[00:08.00]Every bar a barrier
[00:11.00]Manifesting my own fate
[00:14.00]Towered iron drags us down
[00:18.00]Into death, class, sex and race
[00:21.00]Next breath, each denied chance
[00:25.00]Every inability we face
[00:28.00]No fear.
[00:30.00]New frame. New freedom.
[00:35.00]And yet, between the bars
[00:38.00]My mind’s web keeps me stuck in tar
[00:42.00]I cut the strings and ties
[00:45.00]Defeat the doubt – self-made lies
[00:48.00]Find breath through the seams
[00:52.00]A new way to see and be seen
[00:55.00]Shatter the glass and walls
[00:59.00]Dismantle every rule and law
[01:02.00]New dawn. New day. New life. For me.
[01:07.00]About this song:
[01:08.00]Inspired by the irrepressible Nina Simone.
[01:11.00]When asked what freedom means to her she replied, “No Fear - a new way of seeing things.” Despite all the oppressive and ostracizing factors in her life as a woman of colour, civil rights activist, abuse survivor and performer/songwriter of the “devil’s music”, she found her liberation through perspective. She remained untouchable by personally reframing and redefining her value and potential in the world.
[01:21.00]It’s a new dawn. It’s a new day. It’s a new life. We’re feeling good.

Fear is a cage
It holds me
Traps me in an immovable state
Every bar a barrier
Manifesting my own fate
Towered iron drags us down
Into death, class, sex and race
Next breath, each denied chance
Every inability we face
No fear.
New frame. New freedom.
And yet, between the bars
My mind’s web keeps me stuck in tar
I cut the strings and ties
Defeat the doubt – self-made lies
Find breath through the seams
A new way to see and be seen
Shatter the glass and walls
Dismantle every rule and law
New dawn. New day. New life. For me.

Inspired by the irrepressible Nina Simone.
When asked what freedom means to her she replied, “No Fear - a new way of seeing things.” Despite all the oppressive and ostracizing factors in her life as a woman of colour, civil rights activist, abuse survivor and performer/songwriter of the “devil’s music”, she found her liberation through perspective. She remained untouchable by personally reframing and redefining her value and potential in the world.
