[00:00.00]Passage One[00:02.92]One of the greatest heartbreaks for fire fighters[00:06.38]occurs when they fail to rescue a child from a burning building because the child,[00:11.65]frightened by smoke and noise, hides under a bed or in a closet and is later found dead.[00:19.58]Saddest of all is when children catch a glimpse of the masked fire fighter but hide[00:26.05]because they think they have seen a monster.[00:29.08]To prevent such tragedies, fire fighter Eric Velez gives talks to children in his community,[00:37.48]explaining that they should never hide during a fire.[00:41.29]He displays fire fighters'equipment, including the oxygen mask,[00:46.28]which he encourages his listeners to play with and put on.[00:50.88]"If you see us," Velez tells them, "don't hide! We are not monsters. We have come to rescue you."[00:59.98]Velez gives his presentations in English and Spanish.[01:05.03]Growing up in San Francisco, he learnt Spanish from his immigrant parents.[01:10.96]Velez and other fire fighters throughout North America, who give similar presentations,[01:17.74]will never know how many lives they save through their talks.[01:22.34]But it's a fact that informative speaking saves lives.[01:27.36]For example, several months after listening to an informative speech,[01:32.77]Pete Gentry in North Carolina rescued his brother who is choking on food,[01:38.90]by using the method taught by student speaker, Julie Paris.[01:43.76]In addition to saving lives, informative speakers help people learn new skills,[01:50.80]solve problems and acquire fascinating facts about the exciting world in which they live.[01:58.25]Passage Two[02:00.71]Some people want to make and save a lot of money in order to retire early.[02:06.94]I see people pursuing higher paying and increasingly demanding careers to accomplish this goal.[02:14.69]They make many personal sacrifices in exchange for income today.[02:20.65]The problem is that tomorrow might not come.[02:25.41]Even if it all goes according to plan,[02:28.72]will you know how to be happy when you are not working if you spend your entire life making money?[02:34.68]More importantly, who will be around for you to share your leisure time with?[02:40.61]At the other extreme are people who live only for today.[02:44.67]Why bother saving when I might not be here tomorrow, they argue.[02:49.15]The danger of this approach is that tomorrow may come after all.[02:54.83]And most people don't want to spend all their tomorrows working for a living.[02:59.25]The earlier neglect of saving, however, makes it difficult not to work when you are older.[03:06.21]You maybe surprise to hear me say that if you must pick an extreme I think it's better to pick the spend-all approach.[03:15.32]As long as you don't mind continuing to work, assuming your health allows, you should be OK.[03:23.05]At least, you are making use of your money, and hopefully deriving value and pleasure from it.[03:29.84]Postponing doing what you love and being with people you love until retirement can be a mistake.[03:37.23]It may never come. Retirement can be a great time for some people.[03:43.04]For others, it is a time of boredom, loneliness and poor health.
